The Chamber Opera students at the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University have had the privilege of being taught by individuals at the very highest conceivable level within the world of vocal artistry.
Birgitta Svendén – Court Singer, former Rector of the University College of Opera in Stockholm, and former CEO and Artistic Director of the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. Her career has included appearances on stages such as the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and Bayreuth Festival Theatre, among many others. Birgitta is also an honorary doctor at Mälardalen University.
Liz Upchurch – active at the Canadian Opera Company, one of today’s leading opera houses in the world. Liz is a pianist and one of the most sought-after vocal coaches in North America and Europe.
Birgitta generously gave of her valuable time to lead a masterclass for the Chamber Opera students at Västerås Castle, in the beautiful Rikssalen, with the vocal class from the Chamber Music programme attending as audience. We began the day with a simulated audition, during which the students each performed two audition arias from standard audition repertoire and subsequently received feedback. After this, the masterclass began.

“A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting vocal students from the Chamber Opera programme at the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University in a masterclass.
I was deeply impressed by the high standard and experienced several hours of musical joy as these singers truly gave of themselves.
Their vocal technique was at such a high and solid level that we were able to explore different musical ideas and refine the musical expression through both the text and the palette of vocal colours. I have known their teacher, Lena Hellström-Färnlöf, for some time and regard her as one of the finest pedagogues in the country, something this group clearly demonstrated, as all sang with healthy, natural voices and were able to quickly implement the ideas I suggested.

Liz Upchurch has visited the programme several times. On those occasions, the Chamber Opera students received daily lessons, while the other singers in the programme each received an individual lesson.

“I am always present during guest visits and, after the lessons, engage in rewarding discussions about vocal technique and artistry, the singers’ futures, and related topics. This is both inspiring and enriching – I absolutely do not want to become insular in my own teaching. I am familiar with the students’ progression, and it is exciting to see how guest teachers perceive the singers at their current stage of development. An international profession awaits these singers.”

Kammaroperastudenterna vid Musik- och operahögskolan vid Mälardalens universitet har fått äran att undervisas av personer på den absolut högsta tänkbara nivån inom sångarvärlden.
Birgitta Svendén – hovsångerska, tidigare rektor för Operahögskolan i Stockholm, VD och konstnärlig chef för Kungliga operan i Stockholm. Med en karriär vid scener som Metropolitan, La Scala, Bayreuth med mera. Birgitta är även hedersdoktor vid MDU.

Birgitta tog av sin dyrbara tid och gav masterclass på Västerås slott i den vackra Rikssalen för Kammaroperastudenterna med sångklassen från Kammarmusikprogrammet som publik. Vi öppnade upp dagen med en fingerad audition där studenterna sjöng två arior var med provsjungningsrepertoar och därefter fick de feedback. Efter det satte masterclassen igång.
Professor Lena Hellström – Färnlöf: ”Birgitta gav instruktioner på ett sätt som tydligt avslöjade att studenterna håller en mycket hög nivå. Hon gav musikaliska anvisningar som inte ens professionella sångare alltid kan ta till sig av. Timmarna flög iväg och det var en härlig stämning i rummet med både skratt och allvar.”
Kammaroperastudenterna: Vi hade en fantastisk eftermiddag där vi fick ta del av Birgittas kunskap och erfarenheter som resulterade i instruktioner på hög nivå som kompletterar med bitar till våra sångpussel! Vi känner oss oerhört motiverande av hennes positiva respons och feedback.

”För några veckor sedan fick jag förmånen att träffa sångstudenter på Musik- och operahögskolan vid Mälardalens universitets Kammaroperautbildning i en masterclass.
Jag blev mycket imponerad av den höga nivån och fick uppleva några timmar av musikalisk glädje då dessa sångare verkligen bjöd på sig själva.
Deras sångteknik stod på en sån hög och bra nivå att vi kunde utforska olika musikaliska idéer och finslipa det musikaliska uttrycket både genom texten och färgpaletten i röstklang. Jag känner sedan tidigare deras lärare Lena Hellström – Färnlöf som jag betraktar som en av de bästa pedagoger vi har i landet vilket den här gruppen verkligen visade prov på då alla sjöng med friska naturliga röster och som snabbt kunde omsätta det jag föreslog. Jag lämnade skolan med en härlig känsla av energi och tillförsikt om att det kommer nya svenska stjärnskott även i framtiden och här på Musik- och operahögskolan vid Mälardalens universitet finns rätt förutsättningar att ta vara på dessa talanger.”

Liz Upchurch har gästatutbildningen flera gånger. Kammaroperastudenterna har då fått lektioner varje dag och de andra sångarna på programmet fick var sin lektion.
Professor Lena Hellström-Färnlöf: ”Jag är alltid närvarande vid gästbesök och har efter lektionerna givande samtal om sångteknik, artisteri, sångarnas framtid etc. Detta är inspirerande och givande, vill absolut inte bli hemmablind! Jag känner till studenternas progression och då är det spännande att se hur gästlärare upplever sångarna just där de befinner sig idag. Det är en internationell bransch som väntar dessa sångare.”
