At the beginning of my career, opera occupied a large part of my professional life: grand opera, chamber opera, contemporary opera, Baroque opera, children’s opera, and more. To immerse oneself deeply in character interpretation and step into a role together with the stage director, conductor, and singers is among the very greatest artistic experiences imaginable.
It is demanding on every level, yet at the same time incredibly exciting to continue developing one’s artistry and stagecraft through one’s own instrument — the voice.
In one production at the Folkoperan, I performed all three soprano roles in The Tales of Hoffmann. Everything surrounding the performance – orchestra, costumes, makeup, lighting, the scent of theatre dust, nerves, – creates a magic unlike anything else. The stage possesses a unique ability to enchant. A heightened concentration entirely rooted in the present moment and in the service of art demands complete presence, while simultaneously producing a rush of exhilaration where the endorphins soar.
For me, however, it became difficult to combine the demanding schedule of opera productions with family life, two children, a freelance musician husband, and living in the countryside. When the children started school, I therefore chose to decline longer engagements. Instead, my career shifted toward concerts and shorter opera productions.
There were often entirely new programs every week, featuring a wonderful mixture of everything a classical concert and opera singer could dream of performing. Song recitals with themes such as Southern Breezes and Nordic Winds (Spanish and Nordic music), Folk Melodies in Classical Form (Brahms, Haydn, Villa-Lobos, Ravel, Rodrigo, Bartók), fairytale-inspired programs featuring Shostakovich, Musgrave, Bernstein, and Mussorgsky, programs where early poetry met contemporary composers, and much more.
I also had the privilege of participating in many remarkable world premieres of art songs by composers such as W.W. Glaser and B. Färnlöf.
And then there was all the sacred music — from the early Middle Ages through Baroque and Romantic repertoire to ultra-modern works.
Wonderful chamber music collaborations included cantatas, duos, trios, and larger ensembles, again spanning a vast range of historical periods and instrumental combinations: percussion and voice; recorder, percussion, and voice; clarinet, piano, and voice; string trio and voice; oboe and voice; trumpet, string quartet, and voice…
And of course — opera!
To stand on stage and meet an audience, to dedicate oneself to daily practice, and to collaborate with extraordinary musicians throughout the years has been an incomparable privilege.

“Lena Hellström-Färnlöf’s knowledge of repertoire is unique. From the most intimate setting of voice and lute to full symphony orchestra, from Baroque music to newly composed works, from sacred music to art song recitals. Lena has frequently represented Swedish musical life beyond Sweden’s borders.”
